Women Athlete’s Hair Loss

Women athlete hairlines

Do female athletes experience male pattern hairline recession?   Q: Dear Dr. Mohebi, Recently, when watching the Olympics I noticed that the female swimmers seemed to have very recessive hairlines even at very youthful ages. This was highlighted by the US Olympic Women’s Swim Teams Medal Platform Pictures. In this image all but one of the medalists has exceptionally receding hairlines for women. Is this just coincidence or could it be from the use of male hormone performance enhancing drugs. Or is it that, women with this high athletic capacity have a higher level of male hormones adversely affecting their […]

Permanent Side Effects of Propecia – Real or Not?

Q: Hi Dr. Mohebi, Trust you are well. It was a pleasure meeting you in Los Angeles back in June. I had a few concerns about taking Finasteride and wanted to have your opinion before taking the medication. I read few articles that side effects of finasteride include impotence, abnormal ejaculation, decreased ejaculatory volume, abnormal sexual function, gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder and testicular pain of which I experienced some of them when using the medication back in 2010. It was also stated that patients have reported persisting erectile dysfunction despite discontinuing the drug. I do feel this is also the case for me at times. Do I need to consult with a Urologists?  Would […]

Addressing the Challenge of Scalp Scars

Parsa Mohebi, MD  Since the advent of hair transplant surgery, hair transplant surgeons have been challenged to address the scarring that is inevitable from the donor wound in strip hair transplants. Other types of scalp surgeries such as neurological surgeries can also leave linear type scars in the scalp. In addition trauma to the head can leave a person with unwanted scar.  A patient’s natural hair coverage can obscure the visibility of a scar in most cases.  However, proximity to a patient’s hairline and or wearing the hair too short can make a scar more obvious. A hair transplant surgeon […]
