Hair Transplant Patient Guide

Four Reasons to Give a Hair Transplant to Younger Patients

Q: What happens when someone younger restores their hairline, but 10 years down the road, the hair loss of the native hairs has progressed so much that they’re left with a very odd hair pattern?  For example, they are completely intact in the front, but bald in the middle/crown area? Is this a valid concern? How weird would that look? Are we shooting ourselves in the foot by getting a hair transplant so soon in life? A: This is a common concern before a hair transplant that many young patients have.  Hair transplant surgeons used to believe that no one […]

Folliculitis After Hair Transplant

Q: Hello Dr. Mohebi. I had a FUT transplant last month. I’ve noticed that I’m getting some pimples on my transplant area. You mentioned this is a possibility for me, but should I be worried that this will affect my growth? Also, is it safe to put Minoxidil on that area? A: It’s common to have a few pimples after a FUT (Follicular Hair Transplant) on the transplanted area.  These pimple-like lesions are called Folliculitis and they happen due to the inflammation of hair follicles. Folliculitis usually occurs between the first few weeks from your transplant through about 6 months from […]

Latisse and Alternatives for Eyebrow Hair Growth

Q: I would like to have thicker eyebrows.  I heard Latisse could help, so I bought it and have been trying it.  I know I have to use it for a while before I see results, but I am wondering if there is a cheaper option, since Latisse is expensive.  Careprost, Lumigan, Travoprost and Bimatoprost are all alternatives that I see people write about online as a cheaper alternatives.  Do you have a recommendation?   A: Bimatoprost is the scientific name of a synthetic prostamide anolog that is used for treatment of glaucoma (an ocular disorder that results in optic […]

Using Hair Relaxer after Hair Transplant

Q: Hi Doc! I have a question for you.  In the past, I used chemical hair relaxers.  Do you think they damaged my hair follicles?  If not, am I able have a chemical relaxer in my hair 6 weeks post-surgery? Thanx!   A: Hair relaxers do not seem to be absorbed through the skin.  The generative parts of hair follicles are residing a few millimeters below skin level and any product that does not get absorbed through skin, cannot reach the active parts of the follicles and cannot affect their growth.  Most cosmetics and other products can be safely used […]

Q&A: Hair Multiplication/Cloning

Q: Dear Dr. Mohebi- I am 33 years old and have been dealing with thinning hair since I was 19.  That is when I started on finasteride and it has helped slow down my hair loss.  I also use concealers or camouflaging agents to help my thinning areas appear fuller and thicker.  I have been watching for new treatments such as hair cloning to come to fruition and still hold out hope for that one day. In the meantime I have thought about FUE but just do not have the resources financially to afford it.  Do you think hair cloning […]

Q&A: What do I need to do after an FUE transplant?

Q: Hi, Dr. Mohebi! I’m about to have an FUE transplant and I want to make sure I do everything right to maintain my results. Do I need to sleep differently, or buy special shampoos and brushes? Help!   A: Thanks so much for your question! Because FUE transplants are so much less invasive than traditional FUT strip procedures, the aftercare is much simpler. Different clinics have different procedures, but the general principles tend to be the same. The first day after a transplant, we bring the patients back in for an evaluation and hair wash. We teach them the […]

Q&A: What do I need to know before an ARTAS hair transplant?

Q: Hi, Dr. Mohebi! I saw you’re working with the ARTAS robotic hair transplant system, and I think the idea of a machine doing the transplant is really exciting, but I’d like to know more about it before I fully commit to it. Thank you!   A: ARTAS is a robotic device that can help a surgeon extract hair in a more automated way during an FUE procedure. ARTAS is a great option for prospective transplant patients! It can expedite the graft-harvesting process and minimize the human error. This is important for clinics who are not doing FUE on a […]

Q&A: Donor Hair Requirements

Q: Hi, Doctor! I had a few questions to ask about hair restoration… First of all: When you’re doing a hair transplant, are there requirements for the hair length on the donor site(s)? Does it need to be cut short? And can hair be left long where the grafts are being implanted? And secondly: Does having curly hair complicate the procedure? Is there a risk of ingrown hairs or any other issues?   A: These are a couple very good questions! For your first one: There are no length requirements for the donor site or the implantation site. We shave a very tiny part of the […]
