2019 Europe FUE Workshop | Manchester, UK
I recently had the honor to serve as a faculty member for the 8th Annual FUE Europe Conference in the beautiful city of Manchester, UK on June 6 – 8, 2019.
The purpose of the workshop was to gather the elite hair surgeons of the world in one location in order to discuss the latest innovations and breakthroughs in hair restoration surgery along with networking and social functions. Appointed faculty members from all over the world presented cases, gave keynote speeches and demonstrated live surgeries as part of this amazing event.
Cranial Surgery Scars
Many traditional hair transplants, especially FUT, can leave a scar on the scalp. These scalps are also known as “cranial surgical scars”. Cranial surgery scars can also refer to scars caused by many other types of surgeries or accidents on the scalp. However, we are able to use modern technology and scar revision techniques to hide the appearance of these scars on the scalp.
As a faculty member, I presented a series of FUE cases showcasing when I operated on with patients with cranial surgery scars at the workshop. Specifically, I demonstrated a variety of techniques that I have used to decrease the visibility of scars. The amount of scarring in the donor area can be eliminated or greatly reduced by:
- Proper estimation of the size of the strip before removing it. When the scalp is too tight, scalp exercises should be performed for a few weeks before performing the hair transplant.
- Careful wound closure that prevents the edges of the wound from having too much tension. Two layer closure and materials such as staples can help with proper closing and reduce the chances of large scarring.
- Trichophytic closure which allows hair to grow inside the scar and minimizes the visibility of a scar.
The success of treating cranial surgery scars also depends on the type of procedure that we use and the size and severity of the scar. Usually, it is almost impossible to completely eliminate a scalp scar but scar revision methods can minimize the visibility of cranial surgery scars very well. That being said, patients may need more than one method and more than one procedure for maximum improvement of their cranial scar.
Eyelash Transplant
During my visit, I also had the amazing opportunity to perform an eyelash transplant on a British patient who had permanently lost her eyelashes on her right eye from an accident that had occurred on a night out with her friends over five years ago. I worked side-by-side with the host of the conference, Dr. Shahmalak, to extract hair follicles from the back of the head of the patient to make it look like the patient had never lost her eyelashes! Many of the other attendees watched and took notes as Dr. Shahmalak and I performed a procedure that only a handful of people in the world are capable of performing. The patient was beyond satisfied with the results and hopes that this procedure can be used to help more women who have lost their eyelashes due to acid attacks and other incidents.
Trivellini System
I also presented one of the most advanced technologies currently used in hair restoration, the Trivellini device for FUE graft extraction, and discussed the mechanisms involved. As part of the presentation, I used the Trivellini device to demonstrate how to do a “long hair” hair transplant. Faculty and attendees were impressed to see how easily long hair, or “Celebrity FUE Hair Transplant™ by Dr. Parsa Mohebi”, can be done with the latest technology. We hope to see the technology used by more practitioners in the near future.
Mohebi Implanter (Inserter)
I also presented my own invention in hair transplant technology – the Mohebi Implanter (Inserter). The Mohebi Implanter (Inserter) is an innovative device that makes placing hair follicular unit grafts easier and safer during the hair transplantation process for both patients and surgeons. The device was very well-received by the faculty members as they were excited to hear the tool allows for the placement of grafts into the pre-made sites created by technicians.
The learning curve is very short with Mohebi Implanter (Inserter) and any new operator can easily learn the art of efficient graft placement within a few weeks. The Mohebi Implanter (Inserter) is also an ideal tool for placing the grafts with several technicians at the same time. It can be used effectively during simultaneous extraction and placement FUE procedures as Mohebi implanter (Inserter) allows single handed graft placement by multiple technicians at the same time.
Many are looking forward to being able to use it themselves when it hits the market! Here is a video showing how the Mohebi Implanter (Inserter) works:
I invented this device to provide many benefits for both patients and doctors:
- Reduced Trauma to Grafts – Mohebi Implanter (Inserter) reduces the trauma to the follicular unit grafts by minimizing the manipulative forces that may injure the bulb of the follicles.
- Improved Efficiency – The implanter allows multiple operators to place grafts simultaneously which saves valuable procedure time and makes the process easier for the surgical team and more comfortable for patients.
- Quick Learning Curve – The implanting team can easily learn to use the Mohebi Implanter (Inserter), in an efficient manner, within a few weeks.
Final Notes on the Conference
Overall, the workshop was a great success! I was able to share my knowledge and experience, perform a life-changing procedure and picked up some great information as well. Huge thanks to everyone that attended, the wonderful city of Manchester and Dr. Asim Shahmalak for hosting the event!
