Could Hair Transplantation Be An Effective Treatment for Scalp Psoriasis?
Hair transplantation has a reputation of being a purely cosmetic procedure. However, the findings from my most recent publication beg to differ. In fact, we have documented evidence that hair transplant could be a viable treatment for scalp psoriasis.
A Little About Scalp Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a very common skin disease with presentations in various parts of the body, including the scalp. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, “At least half of all the people who have psoriasis have it on their scalp.” Among the common symptoms of scalp psoriasis are itching & hair loss. Typically, it is treated with gels, creams, shampoos, and other medications. Now, thanks to this study, hair transplantation could soon be added to the list of treatments!
Over the past multiple years, I have been conducting a study to determine whether hair transplantation could successfully treat scalp psoriasis.
The findings of the study suggest that transplantation of hair follicular units into psoriatic scalp lesions might be an effective method to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis and it could possibly be used as a treatment option. More studies on the exact mechanism of this phenomenon may lead the way to novel treatments for this chronic disorder. One of the most interesting aspects of these results is the fact that this treatment has never been reported on before this study. The use of hair transplants could help provide relief to millions of people suffering from psoriasis scalp lesions that are resistant to more conventional treatments.
