Could Hair Transplantation Be An Effective Treatment for Scalp Psoriasis?
Updated July 2020
Hair transplantation has a reputation of being a purely cosmetic procedure. However, the findings from one of my most recent publications show that might not be the case. In fact, we have documented evidence that hair transplant could be a viable treatment for scalp psoriasis.
Scalp Psoriasis Explained
Psoriasis is a very common skin disease with presentations in various parts of the body including the scalp. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, “At least half of all the people who have psoriasis have it on their scalp.” Among the common symptoms of scalp psoriasis are itching & hair loss. Typically, it is treated with gels, creams, shampoos and other medications. Thanks to the results of this study, hair transplantation could soon be added to the list of treatments!
Our Study
Over the last several years, I have been conducting a study to determine whether hair transplantation could successfully treat scalp psoriasis.
The findings of the study suggest that transplantation of hair follicular grafts into psoriatic scalp lesions could be an effective method to alleviate the skin lesions of psoriasis and it could possibly be used as a treatment option. More studies on the exact mechanism of this phenomenon may lead the way to novel treatments for this chronic disorder. One of the most interesting aspects of these results is the fact that this treatment has never been reported on before this study. The use of hair transplants could help provide relief to millions of people suffering from psoriasis scalp lesions that are resistant to more conventional treatments.
